To do a PhD, they expect high grades throughout university. So you need the greats to get to the university of your choice. To go the best universities you will need As/A*s.

A-level results you need to A/A* in maths and the same in another two sciences. I only came to the UK for my university so my education system was different, but I also had very high scores in my STEM-related subjects, so I asked my boyfriend what he had for his A-levels since he is an engineer too. But different universities can have different requirements, but this is normally what is it for a good uni.

And to do my Doctorate I had to have a masters degree in a related engineering field with a distinction.

Top grades are the best for any job. My A-levels were lacking but I picked up my work at University and as Shruti and Faranak stated for a PhD you need high grades and often a masters.
