This is completely dependent on the type of artificial limb that the person is using. Some are controlled by motion and move when the person walks because of the way the joint is made. There are some that have computers in the joints which sense the movement and move accordingly. There is also research going into how you can control the movement of an artificial limb with the brain. That is much more complicated and sometimes requires the amputee to have more surgery to make sure the signals can be detected from the nerves.
